The Eyes of a Stranger

As the months pass since the death of our friend, Cookie, she is often present in our thoughts.  On Easter Sunday we sang the song "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today", a glorious and joyous Easter song.  The first verse ends with the phrase, "Sing, ye heav'ns, and earth reply, Alleluia!"  Singing that, accompanied by Brent on the trumpet and Mike on the organ and with Dave enthusiastically adding his voice to the choir, I could envision Cookie, and all the others we love in heaven out-singing us in an other worldly chorus.  Isn't resurrection great?

But the other thing that brings her to mind so many times a day are her photographs on our dining room walls.  Cookie's photography exhibit was titled, "The Eyes of a Stranger".  Her intent was to allow us to see the world through the eyes of others, and she succeeded.  We bought three of her photographs because we loved them and because we loved her.  Somewhere in the back of our minds was also this nagging thought that it was possible that we would soon lose her, but at the time of the show, I was pretty much in denial of that possibility.  I remember thinking that we would be glad we had bought those photographs if Cookie should not find a successful treatment.  Just as quickly I thought, we will love having these photographs on our walls as we enjoy Cookie's friendship for many years to come.

But she is gone now, and I look at these photos every day, and think, these photos are through Cookie's eyes.  The eyes of a friend, who still shows me a part of the world I'll never see with my own eyes.
